Hong Kong basked in sunshine on Saturday, with temperatures in Sai Kung and parts of the New Territories hitting 34 degrees Celsius – but the warm days were forecast to give way to more unsettled weather next week.
A hot weather advisory was in force as authorities urged the public to take care in the potentially dangerous conditions. Humidity of 82 per cent made conditions feel hotter, stuffier and less bearable.
The Hong Kong Observatory said a southwesterly airstream was responsible for the hot weather, bringing soaring temperatures to the southern China coast.
By noon, temperatures in most parts of Hong Kong were at least 32 degrees.
From midday until 2pm, Sai Kung sweltered as the temperature topped 34 degrees, bringing out beach-goers at the start of the weekend.
By 2pm at Lau Fau Shan, close to the Shenzhen Bay Port boundary crossing, and on the north of Lantau Island near Hong Kong International Airport, temperatures also reached 34 degrees.
Sunday was set to be just as hot, according to an Observatory weather forecast. But the meteorological body also said there would be “occasional rain” on Monday.
“Temperatures will drop slightly and showers will ease off in the following couple of days,” the Observatory said.
The average temperature for the month was 24.1 degrees as of May 16.
