Chance to raise Jazz Club roof

WE hear that Reuter's Asian editor, Graham Earnshaw, who'll be jazzing it up in his musical persona at the Jazz Club tonight with Eugene Pao, has quite a claim to fame.

Earnshaw is apparently the first Western rocker to have performed on the roof of the world - that is Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.

For the impromptu concert, he rendered a Chuck Berry number and his own version of Hello, Dolly, although, quite appropriately, he re-titled it Hello, Dalai (geddit?).

Earnshaw's roof-raising act - performed during the time he was based in Beijing - would have been a rare treat for any of the locals who happened to be listening.

Besides, if he had stuck close to the original lyrics, it would have gone something on the lines of: Hello, Dalai - It's So Nice To Have You Back Where You Belong.

The Dalai Lama would surely have approved.
